NEW DELHI: Air India has terminated a simulator trainer pilot after a whistleblower exposed critical lapses in his training procedures.

In response, the airline has also grounded 10 pilots who underwent training under him as a precautionary measure.

The issue came to light after a whistleblower alleged that the trainer pilot failed to properly conduct recurrent simulator training sessions. Air India swiftly launched an internal investigation, which confirmed the allegations.

Following a review of the evidence, the trainer pilot was dismissed, and the matter was voluntarily reported to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

"A detailed investigation was conducted, and, following a review of the evidence, the allegation was corroborated. Accordingly, the said trainer pilot’s services are being terminated. As a precaution, 10 pilots who underwent recurrent training under the trainer pilot have been removed from flying duties pending further investigation," Air India stated as quoted by Indian media.

‘Strict safety protocols’

The airline emphasised that the decision to ground the pilots was a precautionary step to ensure that all safety protocols were met. These pilots will remain off-duty until further assessments confirm their competence and compliance with required training standards.

Air India also commended the whistleblower for coming forward, reinforcing its commitment to transparency and ethical responsibility. The airline has pledged to uphold the highest standards in training and flight safety.

Tata Group’s ethical standards

Since its takeover by the Tata Group, Air India has implemented the ‘Tata Code of Conduct,’ focusing on integrity, anti-bribery, anti-corruption, and whistleblowing policies. A senior management-led Apex Ethics Committee oversees compliance, ensuring a culture of zero tolerance for unethical behaviour.

In 2024 alone, over 30 Air India employees were terminated for ethical breaches, with numerous others facing disciplinary action. The airline has reassured passengers that rigorous safety measures and strict training standards remain its top priority.
